In my opinion, depression is past regret. It could be a decision we wished we had made differently, an event we regret happening, or a path we chose which became painful or toxic.
When we are unable to make peace with our past, we block energy at the root chakra. If we continue to stay blocked, the body will eventually become ill or dis-eased where we are likely to see depression and many autoimmune disorders such as fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, lupus and other problems.
When I first begin working with clients, I generally have no idea why they have come in to see me. What I do know is they are suffering from fear. In depression, they are trapped in the fear of their past. The past event still has power over them and they continue to suffer. It is important for me, as their therapist, to determine whether they are committed to their depression. Unfortunately, many clients will tell you they no longer want to feel depressed but they are unwilling “to give up the hope that the past could have been different”, which is Oprah’s definition of forgiveness. They either had to forgive the persons who inflicted the pain on them or forgive themselves for the pain they have inflicted on themselves. Michael Singer tells us “in order to change we have to resist the urge to stay the same.” Some people feel unworthy of happiness and are resistant to change. For others who are ready, I incorporate a spiritual approach through meditation, yoga, energy, challenging thinking, assertiveness, and mindfulness.
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive treatment for major depression for those who have no had relief with meds and/or psychotherapy. I have seen clients experience positive results from this and thankfully more insurance plans are covering the procedure.
